Lorde hits back at the Grammys for not letting her perform solo

Lorde has appeared to hit back at the organisers of the 2018 Grammys after they failed to offer her a solo performance slot at last night’s ceremony.

While she did attend the ceremony itself, the ‘Melodrama’ artist didn’t perform on the night after turning down the opportunity to take part in a tribute to the late Tom Petty. That decision reportedly came in response to the choice by the Grammys to offer a performance slot to every nominee in the Album of the Year category apart from Lorde.

Lorde appeared to address the issue in a tweet posted earlier this evening (January 29), where she extended an invitation to any of her detractors – including, it seems, the organisers of the Grammys – to come and see her perform live.

Lorde’s latest comments could also be attributed to remarks made by Grammys President Neil Portnow, who drew wide criticism for his take on the lack of female award-winners last night.

“It has to begin with… women who have the creativity in their hearts and souls, who want to be musicians, who want to be engineers, producers, and want to be part of the industry on the executive level,” Portnow said. “[They need] to step up because I think they would be welcome.”

During last night’s ceremony, Lorde promoted the work of feminist artist Jenny Holzer by sewing a powerful excerpt of her work into the back of her gown.
