Erykah Badu responds to controversy after saying she ‘saw something good in Hitler’
 Add to favorites

Erykah Badu has responded to the outcry over her recent interview where she seemingly praised Adolf Hitler.

The R&B superstar and ‘Ms. Jackson’ inspiration had wide-ranging interview with Vulture published earlier this week which explored the very limits of her humanist ethics.

“If you say something good about someone, people think it means that you’ve chosen a side. But I don’t choose sides. I see all sides simultaneously,” she said.

Badu later added: “I’m a humanist. I see good in everybody. I saw something good in Hitler…. Yeah, I did. Hitler was a wonderful painter.”

Vulture‘s interviewer David Marchese challenged her on the statements, and the two continued to discuss the value or otherwise in trying to see the good in people like Hitler.

Badu kept returning to the fact that she is a Pisces and added: “You know what’s right in your mind and your heart, and if you’re strong enough to detach from the hive then sometimes, just sometimes, you may be able to do the right thing.”

Her comments sparked an inevitable backlash, and she has now responded with a series of tweets, suggesting that people had not read the article in full and been misled by “clickbait” exceprts.

“Say what u must. Dialogue is cool . I invite it. But please do me a favor if you can , Black & Jewish Twitter, just don’t use the word ‘problematic’ any more,” Badu said.

“Y’all using that too much … oh and read the article.”

She continued: “I was just using my own brain again. I know it’s against the rules. I know I know.

“The media is banking on our ignorance. Know we won’t read the whole thing. They’ll use controversial quotes w/trigger words as Click Bait.

“We❤️controversy. So Blogs choose easiest thing to ‘spin’. Get you mad. Help you get a little rage out. They get more adds. The message lost.”

The following day she continued to try to clarify her feelings.

“People are in real pain. So I understand why my ‘good’ intent was misconstrued as ‘bad’,” she said.

“In trying to express a point, I used 1 of the worst examples possible, Not to support the cruel actions of an unwell, psychopathic Adolf Hitler, but to only exaggerate a show of compassion.”

Badu continued: “Either U read the entire VULTURE interview & U understood the message of compassion CLEARLY.

“OR U only read the selective, out of context Headlines, & were drawn in2 the whirlpool of collective emotional grief. I don’t want 2 force U 2understand the way I love. I’m hopeful tho… And I still love you.

“Voicing honest opinions (even if they are meant to be loving) in such a sensitive world where most of us are victims of some violent past is very dangerous.

“Even encouraging words can be misinterpreted when taken out of context. Human beings are very delicate. Protect one another.”
