Lynyrd Skynyrd announce farewell tour

Lynyrd Skynyrd have announced plans for a farewell tour in the US and Canada.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members will be supported by Bad Company, Hank Williams Jr and Kid Rock for their ‘Last Of The Street Survivors Farewell Tour’.

The tour kicks off in on May 4 at the Coral Sky Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, Florida.

“It’s hard to imagine, after all these years, the band that Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins and myself started back in Jacksonville, would resonate for this long and to so many generations of fans. I’m certain they are looking down from above, amazed that the music has touched so many,” said Gary Rossington, original and founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Lead vocalist, Johnny Van Zant added: “We’ve been blessed by these great songs and the messages they carry to the fans. It’s been a true honour to try and fill in my brother’s footsteps for the past 31 years, keeping the music and his spirit alive.”

Skynyrd’s final tour comes 45 years after they released their 1973 debut ‘(Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd)’, which included Southern rock staples including ‘Gimme Three Steps’, ‘Simple Man’ and ‘Free Bird’.

The group released four more albums before frontman Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backup singer Cassie Gaines and more died in a 1977 plane crash.

Lynyrd Skynyrd reunited in 1987 with Ronnie’s brother, Johnny Van Zant, serving as lead singer.

Over the past three decades, the current incarnation of the group has toured and recorded a handful of albums, their last, ‘Last Of A Dyin’ Breed’, in 2012.

Rossington is the only Skynyrd co-founder still playing with the band, though guitarist Rickey Medlocke was briefly part of the group in the early Seventies.
