The ‘Classically Smiths’ gig series has been cancelled only a day after it was initially announced.

Yesterday, it was revealed that former Smiths drummer Mike Joyce, bassist Andy Rourke and second guitarist Craig Gannon would reunite later this year to showcase a classical re-imagining of the music of The Smiths alongside the Manchester Camerata Orchestra.

But it has now been announced that the gigs will not go ahead, with the cancellation coming after Rourke publicly distanced himself from the shows and claimed that he was never involved.

“In response to recent comments in the press, the planned Classically Smiths events will now, no longer be taking place”, a statement from producers Bad Production Ltd confirmed.

Speaking yesterday, Rourke said: “I am deeply saddened that during the week of the death of my dear friend Dolores O’Riordan, that false statements are made on my behalf. At no time did I give my consent for anyone in connection with this Classically Smiths project to act on my behalf or my name and nothing was ever confirmed, approved or contracted by me or my team.”

The gigs were initially scheduled to take place in June and July of this year, with an Orchestral twist being added to iconic Smiths tracks including ‘The Boy With The Thorn In His Side’, ‘A Rush And A Push And The Land Is Ours’ and ‘Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want’.
