Jim Rodford, former bassist for The Kinks and The Zombies, and founding member of Argent, has died, aged 76.

The musician’s death has been confirmed by Rodford’s cousin and bandmate, Rod Argent. “It is with deep sadness that I learned this morning that my dear cousin and lifelong friend, Jim Rodford, died this morning (January 20) after a fall on the stairs,” he wrote on The Zombies’ Facebook page.

“More details are not yet known about the exact cause of death,” he added, before paying tribute to Rodford. “Jim was not only a magnificent bass player, but also from the first inextricably bound to the story of The Zombies,” Argent wrote. “To the end, Jim’s life was dedicated to music. He was unfailingly committed to local music an ever present member of the local scene in St. Albans, where he had spent his whole life.”

Rodford joined The Kinks after their bassist John Dalton left in 1978. He spent 18 years in the band, and contributed to every record released between 1979 and 1993. He would also go on to play with The Zombies when they reunited in 2004, and was closely involved with them since their formation.

This is terrible news. As a regular and friend of the studio for many years he was one of the nicest people you'd ever meet. I also had the great fortune of working with him when I ended up playing for Paul McCartney many moons ago. ???? #RIP #JimRodford https://t.co/HjsUr7U0G0
