Watch David Byrne cover David Bowie and Madonna with choir

David Byrne paid homage to David Bowie and Madonna at the weekend with New York public choir.

The Talking Heads frontman performed ‘Heroes’ for Bowie’s birth and death anniversaries, at the Public Theatre in New York City on Saturday (January 13) with Toronto-based group Choir! Choir! Choir!.

The show was led by choir founders Daveed Goldman and Nobu Adilman, who perform by open participation, allowing anyone to join in.

Byrne, who inducted Bowie into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, also performed ‘Borderline’ – a nod to Madonna, who accepted the induction on Bowie’s behalf.

Byrne recently announced his first solo album, since 2004’s Grown Backwards.

The record, titled American Utopia, is set to feature collaborations with Brian Eno, Oneohtrix Point Never, producer Rodaidh McDonald, Jack Peñate, and more.

The first track “Everybody’s Coming To My House” is out now, along with a world tour that promises his “most ambitious show” since Talking Heads’ “Stop Making Sense” concerts.

Speaking about the album, Byrne said: “Is this meant ironically? Is it a joke? Do I mean this seriously? In what way? Am I referring to the past or the future? Is it personal or political? These songs don’t describe an imaginary or possibly impossible place but rather attempt to depict the world we live in now. Many of us, I suspect, are not satisfied with that world — the world we have made for ourselves. We look around and we ask ourselves — well, does it have to be like this? Is there another way? These songs are about that looking and that asking.”
