Smashing Pumpkins covered The Cure‘s ‘Friday I’m In Love’ at a show in Madison, Wisconsin on Wednesday night (November 28).

In fan footage you can see below, guitarist James Iha takes lead vocals in a faithful rendition of Robert Smith and co’s 1992 hit.

The choice of cover might reflect the fact that Billy Corgan’s band will be joining The Cure, as well as Bon Iver, as headliners of Portugal’s NOS Alive Festival next summer.

At the Wisconsin show the band also revived their cover of Depeche Mode‘s ‘Never Let Me Down Again’.

They first recorded it in 1994 and released it as a B-side to the single release of ‘Siamese Dream’ track ‘Rocket’.

Meanwhile, Billy Corgan has revealed that he’s hoping to record a Christmas album, and that he intends to start writing new Smashing Pumpkins material as soon as the band finish their tour.

The band released their first album since Iha and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain rejoined the band, ‘Shiny And Oh So Bright, Volume One’, earlier this year.

NME called the record “a showcase of songcraft that’s allowed to breathe and reveal itself. Bring on volume two. The dream lives on,” in a four star review.

Original bassist D’Arcy Wretzky is not included in the revitalised lineup as relations remain fraught between her and the band.

Corgan has also discussed his reasons for not using Wretzky’s successor, Melissa Auf Der Maur in his reunited group.
