Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix and more all died aged 27

A new episode of popular podcast ‘What Really Happened? will explore the phenomenon of the ’27 Club’, the name given to the unnaturally high number of musicians who died aged 27.

The podcast, hosted by documentary-maker Andrew Jenks, aims to “examine and contextualise historical events while discovering untold stories and unravelling newfound narratives.”

In a trailer for the episode shared by Rolling Stone, Jenks says: “Some say this is nothing more than a media-manufactured term. That’s what I originally thought, but extensive studies going back over 100 years show an unusually high number of musicians and artists who have died at 27 years old.

“After speaking with doctors and statisticians, while The 27 Club is simple enough to remember what’s happening is a bit more complicated. When you factor in elements of fame, drugs, alcohol, money and the mind of an artist, I wonder, what really happened?”

Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, Jim Morrison and Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones are all among those who are ‘members’ of the 27 Club.

What Really Happened? has ventured into music before. Last year Jenks explored Britney Spears‘much-publicised ‘meltdown’ in 2007.

Other previous topics include the death of Princess Diana, an infamous tennis match in which Venus Williams forfeited to her sister Serena, Muhammad Ali talking a man out of suicide in 1981, and why Disney’s John Carter flopped so disastrously at the box office.

The latest episode is out tomorrow (October 24).

Meanwhile, fans of Amy Winehouse have reacted with anger after it was revealed that a hologram representation of the late singer will head out on tour next year.

The music icon, who passed away in 2011 at the age of 27, will be celebrated in a new “immersive” venture, which is being spearheaded by BASE Hologram. It also has the backing of The Amy Winehouse Foundation and the blessing of the Winehouse estate.
