Anna Calvi shares subversive title track from upcoming album, ‘Hunter’

"I wanted simplicity, I wanted something quietly brave, quietly defiant."

Anna Calvi has released the title track from her upcoming third album – ‘Hunter’ – released on August 31.

The track follows the release of the album’s first single, ‘Don’t Beat the Girl Out Of My Boy’ and follows a similar theme of finding empowerment and hope in queer spaces.

Calvi posted a handwritten note describing the track in more detail. She wrote: “I wanted simplicity, I wanted something quietly brave, quietly defiant. I wanted there to be intimacy. I wanted the guitar to answer the voice, to be sexuality. I wanted to find a place between beauty and weirdness.”

She added: “I’m tired of seeing women depicted as being hunted by men in our culture. This woman is the hunter. She goes out into the world and sees it as here – she wants something from it.”

“Hunter is about exploring ones please in all possible ways, free from any shame. It’s about finding a safe space where this is welcomed, and supported.”

Recorded predominantly in London, the album has been produced by Nick Launay who has worked with Nick Cave, Arcade Fire and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Portishead’s Adrian Utley appears on the album playing keys, whilst The Bad Seeds’ Martyn Casey plays bass.

Described as a “queer and feminist record” by Calvi, the Brit and double Mercury Prize nominee said that she wanted her third album to be a chance to express herself whilst “free from worrying how people would judge me on what I want to do with my body and myself. For me, that’s quite a utopian vision.”

Last month, Calvi started to share some of the album’s dramatic artwork on social media, announcing a headline tour soon after. The UK and Ireland tour dates are as follows:
