A backing dancer for Demi Lovato has defended herself on social media after facing a barrage of fan criticism following the singer’s recent hospitalisation.

Lovato was rushed to hospital on July 24 after a suspected overdose. The singer’s family thanked her fans and well-wishers with a short statement after she was hospitalised, writing: “Demi is awake and with her family, who want to express thanks to everyone for the love, prayers and support.”

Dani Vitale, who recently performed as a dancer on Lovato’s Tell Me You Love Me tour, has now addressed Lovato’s hospitalisation in a statement on her Instagram.

She implored the singer’s fans to stop any “negativity” that’s being directed towards her, with some having accused Vitale of being a “bad influence” on Lovato.

“I was not with Demi when the incident happened, but I am with her now,” she wrote. “Like all of you, I have nothing but love in my heart for her.

“There is no need for any negativity towards the ones who care about Demi. There is too much of it in this world as it is.” Read Vitale’s full statement below.

Last week, Lovato’s fans in Atlantic City staged their own concert in honour of the singer.
