Astley says he "bumped into" Berry at the festival site

Bemused Camp Bestival punters were treated to an unlikely collaboration at the Dorset festival on Friday night (July 27), after Mary Berry joined Rick Astley for a drum solo during his headline set.

In the footage, which you can see below, fans were bemused and thrilled in equal measure as the 83 year-old chef appeared live on the Castle Stage to deliver an unconventional solo during the title track from Astley’s new album Beautiful Life.

Mary Berry, best known as a judge on The Great British Bake Off, joined the pop singer for his headline set having been spotted with him at rehearsals earlier that day. Astley had tweeted a picture of the two of them together, saying: “Look who I just bumped into! The wonderful Mary Berry!”

Looking forward to playing @CampBestival tonight… Look who I just bumped into! The wonderful Mary Berry! For those of you at #CampBestival, I'll see you on the #CastleStage tonight at 10pm! – Rick x pic.twitter.com/hfu1toEVyM

Among the many baffled by the appearance was festival organiser Rob Da Bank, who posted a clip of the two in rehearsals earlier in the day, describing it as “one of the odder” moments of the weekend.

He later posted a picture of Berry’s headline appearance on Instagram, saying: “Never imagined this moment in my wildest most hallucinogenic dreams.”

The festival, taking place right now, will be headlined by Clean Bandit tonight, with sets by Declan McKenna, Basement Jaxx and Jane Weaver to come throughout the day. Tomorrow sees the likes of Simple Minds, Shed Seven, Orbital and The Undertones play at Lulworth Castle in Dorset.

Next week at the same site, Bestival will bring the likes of the likes of M.I.A., London Grammar, Silk City (Diplo and Mark Ronson), Grace Jones, Plan B and Chaka Kahn to the same site.

The two festivals are among the first in the UK to go cashless, partnering with the Tappit system. Festival goers will be issued a wristband with a contactless chip, which will also track their usage to provide ‘insights into the habits of fans’. The wristbands can be topped up with cash at a number of on-site locations and then used to make payments at the event.
