Taken from her EP Ready’ in February, the track attracted attention after Nicky Minaj and Quavo from Migos remixed the song. According to the BBC, the success of the track started last summer when a DJ was asked to play the song at an event in San Fransisco.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, DJ Big Von said: “I’ve never seen a reaction like this…when I played it, the whole place went, ‘Woo!'”

Playing the song frequently on his radio show, the song’s popularity grew and first reached number one in May, returning recently to the top spot for a second time this week, knocking Drake’s ‘Don’t Matter To Me’ off the number one spot.

Speaking to The Fader, Mai said: “It has quite a nostalgic feel to it…it’s super innocent, and everyone’s been through that puppy-love sort of thing.”

Deriving influence from Erykah Badu and Mariah Carey, the song is only currently number 62 in the UK charts, despite its success overseas.

The singer has signed to DJ Mustard’s label, the influential producer who has worked previously with Rhianna, Cardi B and Ty Dolla $ign.
