The film is released in September

The first trailer for M.I.A.’s documentary ‘MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A.’ has been released.

The film is directed by M.I.A.’s friend Steve Loveridge and will focus on her life – from escaping the violence of civil war in Sri Lanka at the age of eleven with her family to performing with Madonna at the Super Bowl.

It’s described as “a never before seen cache of personal footage spanning decades” and is due to be “an intimate portrait of the Sri Lankan artist and musician who continues to shatter conventions.”

‘MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A.’ will also look at the artist’s relationship with the Tamil Tigers and her feelings on politics in Sri Lanka. You can watch the trailer below.

The documentary has been long delayed, with Loveridge even leaking a different trailer back in 2013. It eventually premiered at Sundance and will be released in UK cinemas on 21 September and the U.S. on 28 September.

Earlier this year, M.I.A. claimed that today’s mainstream music “sounds like what me and Kanye West used to make” a decade ago.

The artist said she felt like she “trail-blazed a lot, business-wise” up to and around the time of the success of her single ‘Paper Planes’ in 2008.

“If you listen to mainstream music now, every beat sounds like what me and [Kanye] West used to make back then,” M.I.A. said. “I came digitally to an industry that started from selling cassette tapes, so when they signed me, they were like, “Okay, this girl is the future of music.”
