"That England team were biblical"

Liam Gallagher and Wolf Alice have led tributes to the England football team, after a devastating semi-final defeat to Croatia in the World Cup.

Despite taking the lead early on with a stunning free kick from Kieran Trippier, England ultimately crashed out of the tournament after Croatia’s Mario Mandžukić scored the winner in the first period of extra time.

But as the country continues to reel from the devastating defeat, some of music’s most recognisable faces have been paying tribute to the skill and tenacity of the team.

That England team were biblical and the best thing to come out of this is that we got a proper manger Gareth Southgate you rule LG x

Posting on Twitter, Liam Gallagher described the team as “biblical”.

“That England team were biblical and the best thing to come out of this is that we got a proper manger Gareth Southgate you rule LG x”, Liam wrote.

Wolf Alice urged fans to remain optimistic, while touting Gareth Southgate as an unlikely contender for Number 10.

It's still a great day

Other passionate tributes came from will.i.am, who claimed that the defeat had left him “angry and frustrated”.

“I’m upset and frustrated… Now I’m going to eat and chew my vegan meal hard & Angrily…I might break my jaw chewing broccoli because I’m so angry that England lost…we could have won…arrrhggggg!!!!”, he wrote.

Despite being knocked out of the World Cup, England fans are remaining largely positive – having reached their first semi-final in almost 30 years.

After the full time whistle blew at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, England fans were seen belting out Oasis’ ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’.

Although perhaps ultimately correct, Noel Gallagher was booed at a recent gig for suggesting football wasn’t coming home. While playing in Scarborough, the crowd broke out into chants of “It’s coming home”, to which the former Oasis guitarist responded: “Seriously though, it fucking isn’t.”

Brother Liam hit back a day later on Twitter, writing: “Very sad when you can’t support your country coz your Mrs won’t let ya,” he tweeted following England’s win. “hashtag soft lad hashtag under the thumb ITS COMING HOME as you were LG
