Even Matt Berninger knows it's coming home...

A BBC montage of England’s victory on penalties over Colombia in the World Cup – which was soundtracked by The National‘s song ‘England’ – has gone viral since it was first broadcast last weekend.

England delivered their first-ever win on penalties in a World Cup after beating Colombia last Tuesday (July 3), with the side now set to play in the semi-finals of the tournament on Wednesday (July 11) after progressing in the quarter-finals with a comfortable victory over Sweden on Saturday.

It was during the BBC broadcast of the Sweden game that the BBC’s acclaimed clip was first shown. Documenting the drama of last week’s penalty shoot-out, the initial portion of the segment saw footage from Tuesday’s game interspersed with scenes from England’s previous failures at major tournaments.

However, the game’s turning point – Colombia’s first missed penalty – signalled a shift in mood, with England’s eventual victory in the shoot-out sharing screen time with clips of successful images from England’s past, including their famous 1966 World Cup win.

There has been plenty of praise for the National-soundtracked clip since it aired on Saturday – and you can see the montage and some of the reactions to the video below.

The BBC montage of the Colombia shootout soundtracked by @TheNational they showed before the game yesterday is easily one of the best things I've ever seen. Goosebumps. ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

The National's "England" was the best pre-match montage music I've heard for ages

The BBC’s VT of the England football team’s World Cup story, before the Sweden match, cut to The National’s ‘England’ was so great

Had no idea BBC used England by The National at the end of their coverage. An incredible song for an incredible moment. Love it!
