He and his business partner were accused of stealing the idea for the headphones

Dr. Dre and his Beats by Dre business partner Jimmy Iovine have been ordered to pay out $25 million to their former business partner Steven Lamar.

Lamar accused the pair of stealing his idea for ‘celebrity-endorsed headphones’, while Dre and Iovine “argued that Lamar was only entitled to royalties from the first headphone model.”

Lamar initially sued the pair in 2014, seeking $100 million in royalties. The lawsuit was previously dismissed by a judge back in 2015, finding that the royalty agreement related only to the first headphone model.

However, the lawsuit was later revived by an appeals court in 2016 and went to trial last month. The jury has now ruled against the rapper and Iovine, deciding that Lamar is owed royalties on three models – the Studio 2 Remastered, the Studio 2 Wireless, and the Studio 3.

According to The Blast, Dre and Iovine have been ordered to pay Lamar $25,247,350.

The jury broke down the figure between the three models of headphones – awarding him over $7 million for the Studio 2/Remastered headphones, $14 million for the Studio 2 Wireless version and another $2 million for the Studio 3 cans.

Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine sold Beats by Dre to Apple in 2014 for $3 billion.

Earlier this month, it was announced that Dr Dre is making a movie about Marvin Gaye.

Dre has secured rights to the late singer’s musical back catalogue, while the biopic has been given go ahead and is ‘in the early stages of getting the project off the ground’.

The rapper has previously worked on ‘Straight Outta Compton‘, the 2015 NWA biopic about the birth of West Coast gangsta rap.
