Kanye West accused of not clearing sample for new Teyana Taylor album

The track which used the sample in question is 'Issues/Hold On' from Taylor's new LP 'K.T.S.E.', which was released last Friday (June 22)

Kanye West has been accused by the music label Numero Group of not clearing a sample for a song he produced for Teyana Taylor’s new album.

West executively-produced Taylor’s new LP ‘K.T.S.E.’ as part of his recent Wyoming album sessions, which have also produced new releases by the likes of Nas, Pusha-T and West himself.

One track on ‘K.T.S.E.’ has come under scrutiny from Numero Group, however, with the label claiming that West didn’t get clearance for a sample he used from a track that featured on their 2010 Boddie Recording Company box set.

Taylor’s song ‘Issues/Hold On’ uses that sample, which is a cover of Billy Stewart’s 1965 single ‘I Do Love You’ (the artist who recorded the cover is unknown).

Speaking to Pitchfork, Numero Group’s co-founder Rob Sevier said that West and Taylor needed to get the sample cleared – but representatives for the two artists are still yet to get in touch with the label.

“Without getting too nuanced, the Boddie Recording Company owns this master, and we represent their interests in such matters,” Sevier said.

“I want to be explicit that while we haven’t actually heard anything from Kanye’s team about this sample, we are in the midst of multiple other clearances and I don’t want to imply that they don’t intend to clear it,” he added.

Earlier this week, Trent Reznor accused Kanye West and The Weeknd of “ripping off” elements of Nine Inch Nails’ live shows.
