Last weekend, Guns N’ Roses stunned Download Festival with a stunning headline set at the spiritual home of rock music.

But things were looking distinctly different when bassist Duff McKagan took an unexpected trip to a nearby steam festival.

The rock icons were staying at nearby Stapleford Park in Leicestershire, where the neighbouring Stapleford Miniature Railway was holding a steam weekend.

And Duff took full advantage of the activities on offer – even buying a ticket to ride the miniature railway itself.

Unfortunately, he missed his ride after he became caught in conversation with a local fire crew.

“It’s a shame Duff [McKagan] didn’t get the chance to ride on the miniature railway,” miniature railway enthusiast Nigel Spencer told the BBC.

“He’s obviously quite keen on fire engines too.”

The arrival and departure of the band’s private helicopter also meant that the railway was forced to briefly stop – with photos posted on Facebook showing Axl Rose as he boarded the craft.

Describing their Download headline set, NME said: “In those sporadic moments that Guns N’ Roses fire on all brutal cylinders, they’re frankly unbeatable. ‘You Could Be Mine’, ‘Nightrain’, a sumptuous ‘November Rain’ and a show-stopping ‘Paradise City’ are high-water marks of hard rock. It’s a shame all the padding only serves to lessen their stature.”
