Last night saw The National headline London’s All Points East Presents in Victoria Park, inviting members of The Staves and The War On Drugs on stage, as well as paying tribute to Frightened Rabbit‘s Scott Hutchison. Check out photos, footage and the setlist below.

Taking to the stage for sunset after a day curated by the band which featured the likes of Future Islands, Cat Power, The War On Drugs, Broken Social Scene, Spoon and many more, the band opened to the 30,000+ crowd with a stirring rendition of ‘Nobody Else Will Be There’ from 2017’s acclaimed ‘Sleep Well Beast‘ before single ‘The System Only Dreams In Total Darkness’ brought the crowd together in the fullest of voice.

In a career-spanning set loaded with fan favourites and crowd invasions from frontman Matt Berninger, peaks came with a triumphant reception of ‘Bloodbuzz Ohio’, a feral outing ‘Mr November’, the aching grace of ‘Slow Show’ and ‘Fake Empire’, the adopted bittersweet anthem of ‘England’, and new track ‘Light Years’ with The Staves on guest vocals, but the true highlight was the final three songs – assisted by Adam Granduciel from The War On Drugs.

“Adam from The War On Drugs? Are you fucking serious,” joked back Berninger after he was invited to the stage. “That’s fucking awesome.” After mocking the Samsung branding on the horizon before apologising and begging for forgiveness, they then tore into ‘High Violet’s ‘Terrible Love’, before dedicating the delicate ‘About Today’ to the late Frightened Rabbit frontman Scott Hutchison, who passed away last month.

Hutchison was a vocal National fan. The two bands toured together, before guitarist Aaron Dessner produced their final album ‘Painting Of A Panic Attack’.

The show ended on an acoustic rendition of ‘Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks’, stripped back and largely unplugged to allow the audience to sing the track in overwhelming chorus and unison.

Reviewing the show, NME concluded: “Tonight was just the latest rung on the gradual but unstoppable ascent of the band who’ve played the long game and won. Always existing outside of trends and fads, they stand here tonight purely because they deserve it and the people want them to.

“There are no bells, no whistles, no gimmicks, just a flawless catalogue and a whole lotta love. This was their finest hour, but there will be so many more. No one can deny them that. God Bless The National.”
