Drake explains that blackface photo from Pusha-T’s ‘Story of Adidon’
 Add to favorites

Drake has responded to criticism of a photo showing him in blackface and wearing clothes that feature illustrations of Jim Crow.

The photo was used as the artwork for Pusha-T’s latest diss track ‘The Story of Adidon’, which saw him allege that Drake has a secret child.

Pusha-T tweeted about the photo.”Please stop referring to this picture as “artwork”…I’m not an internet baby, I don’t edit images…this is a REAL picture…these are his truths, see for yourself,” he wrote, linking to a gallery by photographer David Leyes.

Drake has now responded to the release of the image, writing, “I know everyone is enjoying the circus but I want to clarify this image in question.”

He goes on to clarify that the photo was not ‘a clothing brand shoot’ or for his ‘music career’ but rather when he was an actor “working on a project that was about young black actors struggling to get roles, being stereotyped and type-cast”.

He ended his statement, writing “This was to highlight and raise our frustrations with not always getting a fair chance in the industry and to make a point that the struggle for black actors had not changed much.” You can read his full statement below.

Clothing brand Too Black Guys, the Canadian streetwear brand Drake is wearing in the blackface photos, also responded to the photo.

“The collection featured several graphics that highlighted the painful and dangerous period of the Jim Crow Era,” they wrote. “Too Black Guys has a history of representing the black experience in an unapologetic way. Although this was not an image from any of our photoshoots, we feel that Drake, who is a long-time friend of the brand, was brilliantly illustrating the hypocrisy of the Jim Crow era.”
