Court rejects Kesha’s appeal to get out of Dr Luke contract

A New York judge has rejected Kesha‘s appeal to remove herself from contracts tying her to producer Dr. Luke.

The legal dispute has been going on since October 2014, when the singer filed a lawsuit in California against Dr. Luke citing “mental manipulation, emotional abuse and sexual assault” while also seeking to end her contract with Sony. Dr Luke responded by counter-suing for defamation, and it was confirmed in August 2016 that Kesha’s case had been dropped so that the singer could focus on the defamation lawsuit.

Today (May 29), her appeal to extradite herself from her contracts with the producer has been rejected, according to THR.

“You can get a divorce from an abusive spouse,” Kesha said during her proposed countersuit. “You can dissolve a partnership if the relationship becomes irreconcilable. The same opportunity — to be liberated from the physical, emotional, and financial bondage of a destructive relationship — should be available to a recording artist.”

Earlier this year, Kesha had to postpone a number of live dates after suffering an injury. However, the injury has not affected her co-headline tour with Macklemore next month.

The pair will be embarking on a string of live dates across North America, with the stint running through to August.

One dollar from every ticket sale will go to charity, with Kesha donating proceeds to RAINN (Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network), and Macklemore working with PLUS1 and donate to racial and social justice charity M&RL Equity Fund.
