Dua Lipa: ‘There is room for pop music at Reading & Leeds festival’

Dua Lipa has spoken out over the representation of pop and females across major festivals in the UK.

It’s been a runaway 24 months of success for the singer. She was recently named as the most successful female artist of the year so far – with her self-titled debut shifting 95,000 copies in 2018, and her massive single ‘IDGAF’ notching up 509,000 combined sales. As well as being tipped to record the next James Bond theme song, her video for ‘New Rules’ broke records after it was viewed over 1billion times on Youtube.

Speaking about increasing the representation of female headlines at major festivals, Dua Lipa said that this was largely down to the attitudes and actions of those in charge.

“A lot of is down to the festival directors and the people they book,” she told NME. “I think people need to start opening their eyes and ears and realising that there’s so much female talent out there. Obviously festivals need established talent but it’s really important to bring new music into big festivals and to give them an opportunity.

“I remember when I was starting out I had to really push to get some festivals slots and to get people to give me a platform.”

She added: “It’s really down to the big board of directors to give us a chance because we have a voice but we need to be empowered to use it. It’s all really down to that.”
