Jazz guitarist Reggie Lucas, who produced some of Madonna’s earliest hits, has died at the age of 65.

Lucas, who was born in New York, first achieved success when Miles Davis personally asked him to become his guitarist at the tentative age of 18.

It was real simple,” Lucas later told the Fader of his introduction into Davis’ circle.

“Miles said, ‘You wanna be in my band, motherfucker?‘ And I immediately said yeah.”

During his time in the band, he met long time production partner James Mtume, with whom he collaborated with on tracks for artists including Stephanie Mills, winning a Grammy for 1981 track ‘Never Knew Love Like This Before’.

But his most recognised effort came in 1983, when he co-produced Madonna’s self-titled debut album, which includes track such as ‘Lucky Star’, ‘Borderline’ and ‘Burning Up’.

“I think everybody involved in the arts has a tendency to take themselves a little bit too seriously”, he said of hid time working on the record.

“I made a great record, and a lot of people liked it. It sold a lot of copies and launched careers and created opportunities for people. And that’s what you want to do. That is supposed to be the outcome of your good work.”

His daughter has confirmed that Lucas passed away from heart failure, after experiencing a slew of health issues in recent years.
