The Weeknd scrapped a ‘beautiful’, ‘upbeat’ album that fans will never hear

The Weeknd finished work on a “very upbeat” and “beautiful” album that will never be released.

In March, the 28-year-old musician released his new EP ‘My Dear Melancholy’. NME said of the record: “Where the 18-track ‘Starboy’ often drifted into forgettable airiness, his latest offering is tighter and more focused, with greater attention to detail.”

Now, the ‘I Feel It Coming’ artist has revealed that he had an entirely different record written and complete. He said that the project was shelved as it doesn’t reflect his current feelings.

“Prior to Melancholy, I had a whole album written, done, which wasn’t melancholy at all because it was a different time in my life…It was very upbeat — it was beautiful,” he told Time.

He continued: “I don’t want to perform something that I don’t feel.”

Asked if fans will ever hear the scrapped material, he replied: “Never.”

During the chat, The Weeknd described the recording process of ‘My Dear Melancholy’ – named his ‘breakup album’ – as “therapeutic”.

“You want to get it out,” he explained. “It’s like you close a chapter.”

Last month, The Weeknd premiered new tracks from his latest release during a headline performance at Coachella. Fans praised the musician’s passion, with the set offering up stripped-back moments.
