Youtube will start crediting musicians properly in their videos

Video platform Youtube has announced that they will be expanding the credits section on music videos moving forward.

Up until now, videos featuring music would have to write credits for music video directors and producers and featuring artists in the description. Youtube’s new description feature, as Pitchfork reports, which will be called “Music in this video”, will amend this.

It will provide credits for the artist, songwriter, label and publisher on all music videos as well as fan-uploaded content that contains recorded music. It will also include links to artist’s various social channels and websites.

Youtube is making use of its Content ID patent which uses copyright owners’ information to identify content. It’s how the platform finds and blocks copyrighted material uploaded without permission.

Meanwhile, it was reported last month that YouTube will increase the number of ads for people that use the platform to listen to music in an attempt to encourage users to sign up to the company’s upcoming new music subscription service.

Lyor Cohen, YouTube’s Global Head Of Music, says that the idea is to “frustrate and seduce” users of its free service. “You’re not going to be happy after you are jamming ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and you get an ad right after that,” he argues.
