 Add to favorites

Fans have paid tribute to Frightened Rabbit frontman Scott Hutchison following news of his death.

The 36-year-old musician was confirmed dead earlier today (May 11) after initially being reported missing in the early hours of Wednesday (May 9).

Hutchison’s band and family have paid tribute, as have fellow music stars like Frank Turner, Biffy Clyro and Alt-J.

Fans have taken to social media to express their grief and share how Hutchison’s music helped and touched them personally.

One fan wrote on Twitter: “I have laughed, cried and shared memories with those closest to me with the soundtrack of his inspiring words”.

Another described Hutchison as “a man who, like no other, said the words I wished I could put together”, adding: “To a world so grey he brought so much colour. A world without you is certainly worse that a world with you”.

Tragic news about Scott Hutchison. I have laughed, cried and shared memories with those closest to me with the soundtrack of his inspiring words. My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

To hear about Scott Hutchison destroyed me. A man whom, like no other, said the words I wished I could put together. To a world so grey he brought so much colour. A world without you is certainly worse that a world with you. RIP Scott Hutchison

Scott Hutchison & @FRabbits music has meant so much to me over the years. His songs got me through some very difficult moments in my life. I'll be forever grateful.

Frightened Rabbit and @owljohn’s music helped (and still helps) me get through some of the tougher moments of my life. Mental health in today’s world still isn’t focused on nearly enough. Getting help is not weak or admitting defeat. I hope Scott can finally find peace

The news about the death of Frightened Rabbit's Scott Hutchison is heartbreaking. Their music got me through so many tough times–I cried all over Germany one summer listening to this song in particular (although the whole album was great) https://t.co/5CALXie8B7

Honestly devastated that Scott Hutchison has died. His music is extraordinary and poignant. So grateful I got to see him live a few years ago. RIP, brother. #FrightenedRabbit

One fan, Michael Conroy, wrote in an in-depth tribute: “Anyone who has listened to Frightened Rabbit will know Scott’s words were incredibly open. Scott exposed his inner turmoil and his darkest thoughts; he gave us all enough warning. When the news came through though it still shocked us, we still had disbelief that he had gone. We still clung on to hope that it was mistaken identity. The reason for this is that Scott was a beacon of light for so many who experience mental health issues. In lyrics, which openly talked of suicide, we found someone who took away the need to express our feelings in the right way.”

“Scott’s lyrics were not all about mental health and not every song was about suicide; it would be hugely disingenuous to suggest that. His writing was gloriously visual. Like an artist searching for beauty in everything he was able to present his visions in beautifully crafted clever lyrics… What wrapped all his lyrics together was the darkness. An ability to see the decay of humanity.”

Conroy added: “What is the most startling thing about Frightened Rabbit is that they were able to couple darkness with light. Music juxtaposed the torture Scott exposed. The music of Frightened Rabbit made it acceptable to talk about these dark issues without everyone shrinking away. Through that, the lyrics have saved many a person. They have given everyone something to identify with, that loneliness is no longer relevant because there is someone else who feels like you. The reason for the outpouring of grief at Scott’s death is because that someone else has gone.”

“As fans we feel loss, we mourn; that pales in comparison to what his close friends and family are going through and will continue to go through for a long time. I hope they can be proud of Scott, I hope they can see how much he meant to so many people and I hope they find comfort in that. Rest in peace Scott.”
