Arctic Monkeys‘ new album is finally out, and it’s safe to say that it has polarised listeners so far.

In a four-star review, NME said that ‘Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino’ “will reward deep-diving listeners – in particular, those with an interest in picking apart Turner’s densest and most self-aware lyrics to date.”

With no singles or tracks shared prior to the album’s release, fans have been taking to social media to give their verdict upon their first listens. Did they agree with NME? Some did, others not so much…

One fan called the album “perfection” on Twitter, describing it as a “calm, sexy, red wine with a cigarette kind of album” suited for those that have been with the band from the start because, well, we’re all old now.

I feel like the people who hate the new Arctic Monkeys album are probably not the people who grew up on 'Whatever you say I am'. We're old now, we want this calm, sexy, red wine with a cigarette kind of album. This album is perfection.

Another fan rejoiced at the band “trolling the idiots who want another ‘AM’ or a repeat of 2006”. “It’s musical brilliance,” Rich argued. “If you don’t appreciate it then I feel sorry for you!”

New arctic monkeys album is so good. Love how it's trolling the idiots who want another AM or a repeat of 2006. It's musical brilliance. If you don't appreciate it then I feel sorry for you! #tranquilitybasehotelandcasino #ArcticMonkeys

One fan liked the record so much he actually wanted Turner to open that taco stand on the moon:

tranquility base hotel and casino is the most interesting arctic monkeys album both musically and thematically and if alex turner did open a taco stand on the moon I’d be first in line

Alex Turner and co have also found an unlikely fan in Pointless‘ Richard Osman, who tweeted that ‘Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino’ was “a very pleasant surprise” and that it was “great that they’re not just treading water”.

Alex Turner is “such a wonderful writer”, meaning that perhaps we can expect the band as an answer on Pointless soon.

This new Arctic Monkeys album is a very pleasant surprise. Great that they’re not just treading water. Alex Turner is such a wonderful writer.

Others were hoping the stripped-back LP was all just a “sick joke”:

It reminded some of this scene from The Inbetweeners:

*Takes out headphones after listening to the new Arctic Monkeys album*

Others were already petitioning for a guitar-heavy album:

The lyrics reminded some of a Trip Advisor review:

Arctic Monkeys album is just Alex Turner reading out a trip advisor review as the rest of the band tries to figure out wtf is happening.

One tweet called it “Sci-Fi Spandau Ballet”:

Jesus that Arctic Monkeys album is tragic. Sure, there’s some nice textures on there, some interesting sounds and signature Alex Turner lyrics however it’s just Sci-Fi Spandau Ballet.

The ‘former’ rock band’s Wikipedia page has even been changed by a disgruntled listener:

Someone has changed the Wikipedia page for Arctic Monkeys ffs ????????

Elsewhere, there were people complaining about people complaining:

“Arctic Monkeys’ new album is shit” starter pack…

— Con. (@iamconnaugh) May 11, 2018

And people complaining about people complaining about people complaining:

dunno if i can be arsed with my entire timeline being filled with either people complaining about the new arctic monkeys album or people complaining about the people who are complaining about the new album

One Twitter user envisioned an alternate universe where all the criticism actually mattered:

“So disappointed by the new Arctic Monkeys album”, tweets Dan_BCFC, age 17. The album disappears, as does the rest of their work after 2007. Alex Turner writes a letter of apology. He goes back to singing about bus stops and mean bouncers. Dan has changed everything.

Arctic Monkeys also appeared on US TV last night, performing ‘Four out of Five’ on Fallon.

Meanwhile, Arctic Monkeys have announced details of a one-off mini film festival, which will take place at the Sydney branch of their ‘Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino’ pop-up shops. Showing over two days will be the likes of Le Cercle Rouge, The Last Waltz, and Inherent Vice.
