Echo & The Bunnymen have angered their fans by trying to reschedule a gig so they could watch the Champions League final.

The band were due to perform at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall on May 26 – the same day as their home club of Liverpool will compete for the European trophy.

In a statement issued last night (May 9), the Liverpudlians announced the date would be rescheduled because they had decided they “couldn’t play a show during the Champions League final”. “We asked UEFA to change the date of the match but they denied our request,” it read. “We would always want to give 100% when we play but in this instance our heads wouldn’t have been in the right place. We sincerely hope you understand.”

Fans began to leave angry comments on the Facebook post announcing the band’s decision, with one writing: “Love the band and good luck to Liverpool, but this is piss poor tbh. There must be loads that have booked hotel rooms.”

The Bunnymen have since changed their plans, releasing another statement earlier today. “Our Birmingham Symphony Hall show will now still go ahead on the original scheduled date of Saturday 26th May,” it read. “We’ve decided to reverse our decision to change the show fate following our fans reaction to last night’s social media announcement.

“Mac and Will are deeply upset about the situation and are really sorry for any unnecessary disappointment caused.”

However, the move still didn’t please fans, with many commenting that they’d already cancelled hotel bookings after the band had announced the show was being rescheduled. “Oh brilliant,” wrote one. “Travel and accommodation cancelled and other plans made. What a complete mess.”

The show is part of the group’s UK tour, which comes ahead of new album ‘The Stars, The Oceans, And The Moon’. The record is due for release on October 5.
