Arctic Monkeys air new material at first show of 2018
 Add to favorites

Arctic Monkeys made their live return last night (May 2) with a show at San Diego’s The Observatory, and aired plenty of new material from forthcoming album ‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino’.

Out on May 11, the band’s forthcoming sixth record is their first since ‘AM’ in 2013. New cuts ‘One Point Perspective’, ‘American Sport’ and ‘You’re So Dark’ got their debut performances at the show, along with a guest appearance from Tame Impala’s Cameron Avery on two new tracks, ‘Four Out of Five’ and ‘She Looks Like Fun’

Featuring some trademark surreal lyricism from frontman Alex Turner, ‘You’re So Dark’ features the golden line “following goblin on tour”, atop a slinking rock ballad. And another clip captured by a front row fan at the gig shows Arctic Monkeys exploring piano tinkles and warm, heady waves of guitar elsewhere.

On a first airing of ‘One Point Perspective’, meanwhile, there’s a hip-shaking guitar solo from Alex Turner, and more than a hint of cinematic ambition.

Arctic Monkeys also played classics from across their discography at the show, opening with the double impact of ‘View From the Afternoon’ and ‘Brianstorm’

‘View From the Afternoon’ ‘Brianstorm’ ‘Crying Lightning’ ‘Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair’ ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ ‘Four Out of Five’ (ft. Cameron Avery) ‘I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor’ ‘505’ ‘Cornerstone’ ‘The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala’ ‘Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?’ ‘One Point Perspective’ ‘American Sports’ ‘Arabella’ ‘Snap Out of It’ ‘You’re So Dark’ ‘One for the Road’

Encore: ‘She Looks Like Fun’ (ft. Cameron Avery) ‘Knee Socks’ ‘RU Mine?’
