A new app that matches album covers to the music on streaming services has been released.

After taking the picture ‘Record Player’ connects the Google Cloud Vision API and the Spotify API, matching the over with the album on the streaming service.

Designed by Patrick Weaver, you can watch a video of how the Record Player app works below.

Last year, Apple bought the popular music recognition app Shazam for around $400 million (£298m).

Speaking at the time of the sale, Apples said: “Since the launch of the App Store, Shazam has consistently ranked as one of the most popular apps for iOS,” the company said. “Today, it’s used by hundreds of millions of people around the world, across multiple platforms. Apple Music and Shazam are a natural fit, sharing a passion for music discovery and delivering great music experiences to our users.”

Apple added: “We have exciting plans in store, and we look forward to combining with Shazam upon approval of today’s agreement.”

Shazam was first released in 1999, operating via text message. Songs were identified through short audio clips, with the app then revealing the artist and song title. These days, Shazam can also identifying TV shows, movies and advertisements – before linking users to their preferred streaming service.

Last month, a new app was launched that allowed users to see festivals with their preferred line-ups, using their Spotify habits.

‘Find Your Festival’ analyses your Spotify listening and then tells you which festival you should be going to this summer.
