J. Cole has responded to claims that he is a “boring” rapper.

The North Carolina rapper released his latest studio album ‘KOD’ last week (April 20). In a four-star review, NME wrote: “KOD’ tackles drugs, demons and addiction for the majority of its 12 tracks, with Cole seemingly keen to caution his fans, rap peers and society at large about this delicate and pertinent set of topics.”

In a new interview with Vulture, Cole discussed how he was told in the past that he was “too boring” to appear on magazine covers. “In 2012, it was infuriating,” he said. “It was mad hurtful, it felt more like I was a victim.”

The musician explained how he moved beyond those feelings, saying: “Once I took control of my own shit, stopped giving power to other people for my happiness and success, it became like, ‘Oh word, I’ll show you how boring I am.’ And it became another person to prove wrong.”

Cole also revealed the initial inspiration for ‘KOD’ came from watching Kendrick Lamar in Detroit on his ‘DAMN.’ tour last year. “Kendrick’s show gave me chills because I got to see what it was like to have a hit album performed, and it set off a desire,” he said. “It was a recognition – like, ‘Oh, I’ll take that again.’ Like looking at a menu, ‘I’ll have that again.'”

It was recently speculated that Cole and Lamar could be secretly collaborating on a track. They previously worked together on 2015’s ‘Forbidden Fruit’, and Top Dawg Entertainment Punch sparked excitement after he shared an image of fruit with the caption “4bidden” on his Instagram page.
