Kanye West says John Legend is trying to ‘manipulate his free thought’
 Add to favorites

Kanye West has said John Legend is trying to “manipulate [his] free thought” in a conversation between the musicians.

The rapper has sparked controversy by sharing pro-Trump sentiments in recent tweets, as well as hitting out at Barack Obama and posting photos of himself in a Make America Great Again hat.

Now, West has shared a screenshot of a conversation with Legend, in which the latter said he hoped the star would “reconsider aligning yourself with Trump”. “You’re way too powerful and influential to endorse who he is and what he stands for,” Legend wrote. “As you know, what you say really means something to your fans.

“They are loyal to you and respect your opinion,” he continued. “So many people who love you feel so betrayed right now because they know the harm that Trump’s policies cause, especially to people of color. Don’t let this be part of your legacy. You’re the greatest artist of our generation.”

West responded by telling Legend he loved him and appreciated his thoughts. However, he went on to say: “You bringing up my fans or my legacy is a tactic based on fear used to manipulate my free thought.”

The singer replied, urging West to “think freely” and “think with empathy and context too.” “Your words and actions have consequences,” he noted. He added: “And since you’re posting texts, let me add that I have a new single out haha.”

West later tweeted that he “really appreciate[d] this dialogue” because he is “actually very empathetic.” “I’m still the kid from the telethon,” he wrote. “I feel when people think of MAGA they don’t think of empathy.

I really appreciate this dialogue with John Legend because I'm actually very empathetic. Im still the kid from the telethon. I feel when people think of MAGA they don't think of empathy.

This is year one. We can't ad empathy to MAGA by hating. We can only ad empathy with love and time and truly hearing all sides

Legend is one of many musicians to criticise West since he began making comments in support of Trump on Twitter. Meanwhile, Chance The Rapper has defended the star, saying he is ““in a great space and not affected by folk tryna question his mental or physical health”.

“Black people don’t have to be democrats,” Chance added. “Next President gon be independent”.
