The Killers paid tribute to Tom Petty at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony last night (April 14).

The musician died on October 2, 2017 after an accidental overdose of prescription drugs that was later confirmed to be “as a result of taking a variety of medications”. He was 66 years old.

The Las Vegas band covered Petty’s ‘American Girl’ during the ceremony, which saw frontman Brandon Flowers incorporate another of the artist’s songs, ‘Free Fallin” into the end of the performance. Watch footage of the cover below.

Midway through, Flowers told the crowd to get on their feet and “pay some rock’n’roll respect to the impenetrable, to the masterful, to the eternal Tom Petty.”

Flowers also inducted new wave band The Cars into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame at the Cleveland event. Speaking to Rolling Stone of the group, he said: “I feel like it was yesterday that my mom was complaining about the sound that was coming out of the speakers when I had The Cars in. I can’t believe it’s been over 20 years now since those moments, but they were the first band I fell in love with, and they set me on the right track.”

He continued to explain that the band “really gave [him] a home” and set him on a path that led to him marrying his wife and “the life that [he’s] living”. “I’m really grateful for that,” he said.

In March, The Killers’ hit ‘Mr Brightside’ celebrated its 200th week in the UK Top 100, almost 14 years after it was originally released.
