 Add to favorites

Timmy Matley, singer with doo-wop group The Overtones, has died at the age of 36.

In 2016, Irish-born Matley was diagnosed with stage three malignant melanoma, a form of skin cancer, but had recently said that scans looked “positive” and that the cancer was in “regression”.

The band announced the news of his death on Twitter, with his agent also confirming that he “died suddenly” on Monday (April 9).

His bandmates wrote: “It is with great sadness that we have to announce that our dear friend and brother Timmy has passed away. We know this news will be as heartbreaking for you all as it is for us. We appreciate your love and support at this difficult time.”

Matley’s agent said in a statement to the BBC: “No further details are currently available. Family and friends are devastated at the news and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

Matley had announced that he intended to take part in a charity skydive in aid of Chelsea’s Royal Marsden hospital, where he had received treatment, on May 4. The fundraising campaign is still open and has so far made over £6,000.

Writing on the JustGiving page, Matley had said: “My latest scans look really positive, with most of the cancer in regression, and I’ve got my fingers crossed that when I have my next full scan at Christmas, I will be diagnosed NED (no evidence of disease).”

Matley, along with bandmates Lachie Chapman, Mike Crawshaw, Mark Franks and Darren Everest, released five albums as The Overtones, four of which reached the top 10 in the UK. Debut ‘Good Ol’ Fashioned Love’ peaked at number four in March 2011.
