Macklemore has slammed President Donald Trump in a new interview with NME, remarking that it is “disheartening” to see Trump “dividing human beings.”

The rapper – aka Ben Haggerty – is currently on tour in the UK in support of his second solo album ‘Gemini’, and will play at Birmingham’s O2 Academy tonight (April 8).

Macklemore spoke to NME ahead of those UK live dates about a number of subjects, including Trump’s negative treatment of transgender people serving in the US military.

“I think it’s bigotry in the truest sense of the word,” he said about the President’s controversial support for banning transgender people from serving in the US military. “It’s discrimination.

“It’s disrespectful to all Americans, particularly to Transgender people, who want to serve our nation, just the same way anyone wants to serve. They should have that opportunity, of course, and it’s disheartening to see a President dividing human beings.”

Macklemore also shared the opinion that it’s “okay” for hip-hop to be less politicised in 2018, remarking: “I don’t think just because all of a sudden Trump’s our President that everyone needs to make a Trump song or make a political song.

“Everything that’s coming out of Atlanta is massive; I love that music and that’s the music that I listen to. It may not be the most political music, but its music that resonates with the youth. It resonates with the people.”
