Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody opens up about his battle with depression
 Add to favorites

Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody has opened about overcoming depression and alcoholism.

The band are currently gearing up to release ‘Wildness’ – their first new album in seven years. However, Lightbody has revealed that during that period he fought to overcome a ‘lifetime’ of ‘not wanting to be here’ – with his demons manifesting themselves as “self-hatred”, and turning to drugs and alcohol.

“Winston Churchill had a great name for depression: his black dog. And I think that was probably it – it was just an animal of some sort that just lived with me… and that frightened me,” Lightbody told The Telegraph. “Now I understand you have to put your arm around it. The only way to conquer a fear is to face it, and make friends with it, because then it doesn’t have any power over you.”

Lightbody added that he “thought about not existing,” but never contemplated “how to get there”.

“I just felt really, really sluggish… my will to live had kinda ebbed away.”

After receiving acupuncture and treatment for a severe sinus problem, circumstances then pushed Lightbody to put the brakes on, assess his life and cut out drugs and alcohol – as well as learning to appreciate the support of his friends and loved ones.

“The thing I realise about depression now that I didn’t really properly understand before is: you don’t get through it on your own.”
