DMX sentenced to prison

DMX has been sentenced to one year in prison.

The rapper was handed the sentence during a hearing in Manhattan earlier today (March 29) for tax evasion charges. DMX – real name Earl Simmons – pleaded guilty to the charges last year and could have been given a maximum sentence of five years.

Following 12 months in jail, Simmons will then have three years of supervised release, as TMZ reports.

When he was first arrested in July 2017, the rapper was facing 14 charges of tax fraud. He initially pled not guilty and paid $500,000 (£355K) to be released on bail, but later pled guilty to one count in November as part of a deal with authorities. If he had not struck a deal, he could have faced up to 44 years in prison.

DMX’s lawyer is reported to have shown his video for ‘Slippin” during the hearing. Murray Richman requested to be able to do so in a court filing obtained by the Associated Press.

In the papers, the lawyer argued his client may be “too emotional” during the hearing to speak and that playing some of his music may help the judge to “understand [DMX] genuinely in his voice”.

Speaking about DMX’s music, Richman wrote: “It is raw Earl. We are not here or desirous of moulding him into what some may want to see; Earl is uniquely him and that is both his beauty of mind and his genius.”

Back in January, DMX was sent to prison for violating the terms of his bail after he failed a drugs test.
