Johnny Marr has revealed that there’s a song on his upcoming new album that reminds him of The Smiths‘ classic ‘There Is A Light That Never Goes Out’ – crossed with Patti Smith.

Speaking in the new issue of Uncut Magazine, the guitar legend revealed all about his upcoming third album ‘Call The Comet’ when he opened about the sound of key track ‘Hi Hello’.

“When I did the string part, I was aware that it sounded like ‘Dancing Barefoot’ by Patti Smith,” said Marr. “But I think it also sounds like The Smiths ‘There Is A Light That Never Goes Out’. I don’t do that very often.

“I’m usually hellbent on trying not to repeat myself. But if after 30-odd years, I play a phrase that reminds me of one of my old songs, I’m not going to flagellate myself over it.”

He continued: “There’s some H.G. Wells in there. I’ve been reading a lot of interesting stuff from the early 20th Century. It’s not quite utopian, but it’s imagining a new kind of society. That’s how I felt going into it at the start of last year.

The full details of ‘Call The Comet’ are said to be ‘coming soon‘, with the record due for release on June 22.

Tour dates are also expected to be announced shortly.
