A Tribe Called Quest say the Grammys “fucked up” by not giving them an award
 Add to favorites

A Tribe Called Quest have opened up about their Grammys snub this year, after the influential group didn’t receive a single nomination.

The pioneering group released their final album, ‘We got it from Here… Thank You 4 Your service’, in November 2016. The record also marked ATCQ’s first release since the death of founding member and MC Phife Dawg in March 2016.

With that album eligible for nomination at the 2018 Grammys, band member Q-Tip responded with surprise and shock after ‘We got it from Here… Thank You 4 Your service’ failed to bag a single nod in the nominations announcement.

Now, the rest of the group have expanded on their thoughts that the Grammys “fucked up” on Sway In The Morning.

“Just to be honest with y’all,” Q-Tip’s cousin and rapper Consequence says, “We all thought we was going home with the statue.”

Tribe’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad then responds to the Grammys’ explanation that their 2017 performance was tribute enough to their legacy. “To say that the group performed and that should be your consolation prize, I think is very disrespectful to the art that you put forth,” Muhammad says.

Consequence also notes that the album was Phife Dawg’s “last effort on Earth: “I want you to understand the magnitude of that.”

He adds: “They fucked up…. Anybody that come back 18 years after a hiatus and performs the year before, naturally you would assume that I should have something on my mantle in about 12 months.” Watch the interview below.

A Tribe Called Quest’s final performance was at Bestival 2017.

Q-Tip announced the group’s breakup on-stage at Panorama Festival, before paying tribute to Phife Dawg.

At the performance in New York City, Q-Tip announced that this would be the last time Tribe would perform as a group in the city. Q-Tip shared a similar message at FYF Festival in LA: “This is our final performance here in LA as Tribe, obviously because Phife Dawg, our anchor, has been called to another mission”.
