Beyoncé and Jay-Z‘s announcement video for their upcoming ‘On The Run II’ tour was inspired by a Senegalese movie from the 1970s, it has emerged.

The husband-and-wife duo announced the huge joint tour yesterday (March 12), three years on from the first time they co-headlined a tour.

The announcement of the ‘On The Run II’ tour was accompanied by a video which showed clips of Beyoncé and Jay Z on the road together, as well as new shots of the couple sitting on a motorbike. See the clip below.

Fans of the two artists have now established that the tour video appears to have been influenced by the 1973 Senegalese film Touki Bouki, which was directed by Djibril Diop Mambéty.

Touki Bouki – which roughly translates to “a hyena on a journey” – follows a couple who embark on a road trip from the Senegalese capital, Dakar. The couple, Mory and Anta, harbour dreams of making it to Paris, and thus attempt to make money in order to fly to France.

Twitter users have picked on Beyoncé and Jay Z’s referencing of Touki Bouki, with one writing that Africa “will always inspire”.

Africa, the continent that will always give, the continent that will always inspire!

???????????????? Shout out to whomever art-directed Jay-Z and Beyoncé's poster. The "Touki-Bouki" reference is not lost on us. Djibril Diop Mambéty would be proud. #OTRll ????????????????

Beyonce and Jay Z pay tribute to my son's godfather, Djibril Diop Mambety, whose film #ToukiBouki is shaking up the world 45 years after it was made. Some of us knew magic when we saw it. #blackworldcinema #blackartmatters pic.twitter.com/Bj9TAiIzo6
