Kendrick Lamar to feature on guest-heavy Herbie Hancock album

Kendrick Lamar is set to feature on jazz legend Herbie Hancock’s guest-heavy new record.

The 77-year-old artist’s last album ‘The Imagine Project’ was released back in 2010. There were whispers of a new LP emerging before the end of 2016 – though it never came to fruition.

Now, Hancock has shared a promising update on his upcoming release – revealing an impressive array of collaborators, including Kendrick Lamar. Also set to appear are Snoop Dogg, Thundercat, Flying Lotus, Travis Scott and Kamasi Washington.

Production is in the hands of keyboardist and saxophonist Terrace Martin, who has previously worked with Kendrick, Snoop Dogg and Stevie Wonder.

Though Hancock has won 14 Grammys across his career, he’s highlighted the importance of these contemporary collaborators.

“I’m learning a lot from the young people I’m working with,” he told The San Diego Union-Tribune. “Because they built the new structures, social media and that whole arena, and that affects how you get things out in front of the public to let them know you’re working on something… So I’m still learning, which I’m very happy about.”

Hancock added that he wants to “make records that point toward the concept of bringing people together and working toward encouraging people to aspire to be global citizens, and not just American citizens, or Italian citizens or Japanese citizens”.

A release date and title for the album are yet to be announced.

Meanwhile, it’s been reported that Kendrick Lamar could appear as a super-villain in the sequel to blockbuster smash Black Panther.

The rapper played an integral role in the recent release of Black Panther, crafting the box office record-breaker’s soundtrack. Now, he wants to step it up, with an on-screen appearance in the film’s sequel – with the desire to play a “loved and misunderstood” role akin to Michael B. Jordan’s polarising Eric Killmonger.
