Spotify launches new feature for International Women’s Day

Spotify and Smirnoff have launched the “Smirnoff Equalizer”, a new tool that shows users a breakdown of their listening habits in terms of gender.

The new function has been unveiled ahead of International Women’s Day, which takes place tomorrow (March 8).

The equaliser shows the percentage of female versus male musicians you listen to on the streaming service and, for those whose results skew in favour of male artists, will generate a more balanced playlist.

The launch stems from the lack of female representation in Spotify’s 2017 Year In Music statistics, according to a press release. No women featured in the top 10 most streamed albums worldwide, while only two female artists appeared in the top 10 songs.

Last month, Spotify officially filed to go public. The streaming service revealed its plans in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

It’ll trade in the New York Stock Exchange under the name ‘SPOT’. The Financial Times remarked that Spotify’s foray into the market “could be one of the biggest tech debuts this year”.

In the filing, Spotify declared that it had contributed hugely to reversing the downward financial trajectory of the music industry, while also arguing that music streaming would continue to be big business for the industry.
