Empire Of The Sun disagree over controversial Billy Graham tribute
 Add to favorites

Empire Of The Sun appear to be in disagreement over a tribute made to Christian evangelist Billy Graham on their official social media channels.

The Baptist minister was a controversial figure due to homophobic, anti-Semitic, and other discriminatory views that he held, despite advocating for an inclusive approach to religion.

Graham died yesterday, aged 99, and the Australian band joined those paying tribute to him with a post on their Facebook and Instagram pages. As Stereogum points out, the message – a photo of Graham with a quote from him saying he died he “would have gone into the presence of God” – appears to have been posted by frontman Luke Steele.

His bandmate Nick Littlemore commented on the post, which was captioned “God bless the great Billy Graham”, writing: “Not all of us are interested in celebrating a life of a bigot #fyi”.

The band last released an album in 2016 with their third record ‘Two Vines’, which saw them collaborate with Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham. In a two-star review, NME wrote: “This time, they say, the album’s vision is that of a city overtaken by jungle. While that sounds interesting, the reality is that this is the sound of a band coasting.”
