Jack Whitehall was involved in a rather awkward moment with Liam Payne and Cheryl at tonight’s BRIT Awards.

During the televised broadcast, host Whitehall approached the couple’s table – which just happens to be right next to Haim‘s table – and asked “how date night is going”.

Whitehall then made a reference to Payne’s Fifty Shades song and asked whether they had a “safe word”.

“She knows it,” Payne answered, to which Cheryl added: “Um, ‘Don’t stop’?”. See that moment beneath. They also got photobombed by Este Haim…

The 38th BRIT Awards take place at London’s O2 Arena this evening (February 21).

Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, Foo Fighters, Justin Timberlake and Chris Stapleton, Rag’n’Bone Man and Jorja Smith, Rita Ora and Liam Payne, Sam Smith and Stormzy are all confirmed to perform during the main show.

Paloma Faith, Clean Bandit and Julia Michaels, J Hus, Liam Payne and Jorja Smith, and Stormzy performed prior to the ceremony.

Dua Lipa made BRITS history with her five nominations, the most a female solo artist has received in one year at the awards. She is in the running for British Solo Female Artist, British Artist Video of the Year, British Breakthrough Act, British Single and Mastercard British Album of the Year.

The pop star has also bagged the most nominations at this year’s BRITs, with Ed Sheeran following behind her with four. Stormzy and J Hus, meanwhile, have three nominations apiece.

Jorja Smith is the first confirmed winner at the ceremony, having been voted the 2018 Critics Choice Award recipient.
