Ultimate Painting confirm split and scrap previously-announced album

Ultimate Painting have cancelled the imminent release of their new album ‘Up!’ after deciding to split up as a band “due to an irreconcilable breakdown”.

The London band initially formed in 2014 after James Hoare and Jack Cooper met while touring with their respective bands Veronica Falls and Mazes. The duo released three albums during their time together, and had signed to Bella Union last year to release ‘Up!’.

However, the release of ‘Up!’ has now been scrapped as Ultimate Painting have today (February 12) announced that they have split up.

Taking to Twitter, Cooper wrote in a statement: “Anyone who has worked with us knows that the partnership at the core of this band has always been a very fragile thing, but due to an irreconcilable breakdown we will no longer be working with each other.

“Thanks to everyone who bought our records and supported us. You know who you are,” he added.

As a result, the band have asked Bella Union to cancel the release of ‘Up!’ while also cancelling all of their remaining tour dates. See Cooper’s full statement below.

Very sad to announce that @ult_painting are no longer a band

Ultimate Painting released their three albums – ‘Ultimate Painting’, ‘Green Lanes’ and ‘Dusk’ – in consecutive years from 2014-16 – a fact that Cooper reflected on in a recent press release for ‘Up!’.

“We started to question what people wanted from us and in the process I think we briefly lost the idea of what the band was,” he said. “We made the first three records so quickly, so no doubts had had the opportunity to creep in.

“It was all momentum.”
