Jóhann Jóhannsson, the award winning Icelandic composer has passed away, his manager has confirmed.

Jóhannsson created scores for celebrated films including 2014’s The Theory of Everything and Sicario. His work on The Theory of Everything earned him a Golden Globe award and an Oscar nomination.

Speaking to Variety, Jóhannsson’s management confirmed that he passed away on Friday (February 9) in Berlin, but the cause of death is not yet known. He leaves behind his parents, sister and daughter.

In a statement on Jóhannsson’s Facebook page, Redbird Music Management wrote: “It is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of our dear friend Jóhann. We have lost one of the most talented and brilliant people who we had the privilege of knowing and working with. May his music continue to inspire us.”

Born in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1969, Jóhannsson played in Icelandic rock and electric bands including Olympia, Unan and Ham throughout the nineties. He co-founded art collective and record label Kitchen Motors before releasing his debut solo album ‘Englabörn’, in 2002.

Jóhannsson went on to release nine solo albums, including 2016’s ‘Orphée’, along with his compositional work for films and television. His work includes scores for 2016’s Arrival, along with upcoming films The Mercy and Mary Magdalene.

Jóhannsson’s last performance was two weeks ago at Barcelona’s Auditoril and he was scheduled to appear at this summer’s Primavera Sound festival.

The music world has already begun paying tribute to the composer, with Flying Lotus tweeting: “Jóhann Jóhansson has been such an influence, especially lately. I’m in disbelief.”

Johann Johansson has been such an influence, especially lately. I’m in disbelief. The stuff he did for @panoscosmatos “Mandy” is incredible.

Tim Hecker was also among musicians who have paid tribute. He wrote: “Johann was an amazing composer, a gentle spirit as well as a favorite collaborator and human being. Drift easy into the night and Rest In Peace my friend.”
