Katy Perry admits ‘I Kissed A Girl’ lyrics are problematic

Katy Perry has said that she would rewrite her breakthrough hit ‘I Kissed A Girl’ if she could, admitting that the lyrics contain “a couple of stereotypes”.

Perry released ‘I Kissed A Girl’ in 2008 and was criticised at the time by Gossip’s Beth Ditto, who argued that the song was offensive to gay culture.

Addressing the song’s controversial lyrics, Perry recently told Glamour: “We’ve really changed, conversationally, in the past 10 years. We’ve come a long way. Bisexuality wasn’t as talked about back then, or any type of fluidity.”

“If I had to write that song again, I probably would make an edit on it,” she said. “Lyrically, it has a couple of stereotypes in it. Your mind changes so much in 10 years, and you grow so much. What’s true for you can evolve.”

Last year saw Katy Perry discuss the inspiration for her hit ‘I Kissed A Girl’, saying: “Truth be told, I did more than that”.

Miley Cyrus also claimed that the song was written about her. In an interview on 103.5KTU’s Cubby and Carolina in the Morning, Cyrus claimed she was the cherry chapstick-wearing subject of the track.

“Katy Perry, she’s been a friend of mine for a really long time. We were actually just realising the other day that next year, we’ll have been friends for 10 years. I think that’s my friend that I’ve known the longest, which is really, really weird,” Cyrus said.

“When she came out with ‘I Kissed a Girl,’ I was doing the Hannah Montana movie, and I heard her on the radio, they said, ‘Who’d you write that about?’ And she said me.”

Recalling the first time she heard the song, Cyrus said: “And I was on a four-wheeler. We had a radio attached to the four-wheeler. I heard it and started screaming and freaking out.”
