Beyonce’s father says she would be less successful if she were darker skinned

Beyonce‘s father and former manager Matthew Knowles has suggested that she and a number of her peers would be less successful if they had darker skin.

Matthew has written a book about racism and colourism, in which he discusses how his identity as a black man impacted on his life in the music industry.

The 66-year-old was talking to Ebony about his book Racism: From the Eyes of a Child when he argued that black artists such as his daughter and Rihanna were viewed upon more favourably by radio and the mainstream media as they had a lighter skin tone.

“When it comes to black females, who are the people who get their music played on pop radio?” said Knowles. “Mariah Carey, Rihanna, the female rapper Nicki Minaj, my kids [Beyonce and Solange], and what do they all have in common?”

“They’re all lighter skinned,” the interviewer replied, to which Matthew concluded “Do you think that’s an accident?’

Beyonce meanwhile, is set to return to the road in 2018 – headlining Coachella alongside The Weeknd and Eminem.

She made headlines with her appearance at the GRAMMYs last month. Firstly, she made an elderly lady go viral after sharing a photo of her stunned expression after passing her by, and Blue Ivy became an instant meme when appearing to tell her parents to stop clapping during the ceremony.
