The internet is loving this boy’s reaction to Justin Timberlake’s Super Bowl Half Time Show

A young fan at the Super Bowl has become the toast of the internet after he appeared to stare at his phone while Justin Timberlake performed the Half Time Show next to him.

The fan, later identified as 13-year-old Ryan McKenna, had taken a selfie with Timberlake only moments before – and was understandably staring at the photo when the cameras focused on him.

But to casual observers, it appeared as if he wasn’t entirely enamoured with Timberlake’s performance, prompting his unlikely transformation into a meme.

Among the best responses was the suggestion that the youngster didn’t have any idea who Timberlake was – while others likened him to Katy Perry’s ‘left shark’.

Star of the #SBLII halftime. Kid who isn't quite sure what to do with his phone, Timberlake dancing 3 feet away and 100m watching.

“I just thought to myself, ‘I’ll never get this opportunity again in my whole life,’” McKenna later said of his moment in the spotlight.

“I just went for it.”

His dad John added: “My phone started blowing up.

“It died, like, instantly after it happened. We had friends from all over reaching out. I couldn’t believe it.”

The moment came during Timberlake’s divisive Super Bowl performance, which was deemed lacklustre by huge swathes of viewers.

In our report of the night, NME described Timberlake’s turn as “opportunistic” and “underwhelming”.

“Cameraphones flashed around him, but what they would have caught was not a man closing out a triumphant performance, but one that was uninspired, mediocre, and – Prince tribute aside – instantly forgettable”, our official verdict claimed.
