Metallica’s Kirk Hammett says the band are “uncomfortable” with how long their new album is taking

It's already three years since the metal veterans released their last LP

Metallica‘s guitarist Kirk Hammett has admitted that he feels “uncomfortable” over the long wait fans have had to endure with their previous albums.

The band had an eight year gap between 2016’s ‘Hardwired…To Self Destruct’ and 2008’s ‘Death Magnetic’.

And it’s looking like they won’t be getting into a recording studio any time soon with the guitarist confirming the band will not finish their current world tour until November 2019.

“When I was 13-14 years old, bands put out albums every year,” Hammett told Mixdown. “Seriously, KISS put out an album every eight months. None of this eight years between albums.

“None of us are very comfortable with the fact it’s been so long, because that is a long time. We’re hoping to avoid that this time around.

He added: “We’re in our third year since ‘Hardwired’. Maybe we can get a bit more focus and go into the studio a bit sooner. I have a ton of material. I’ve over-compensated, so I’m ready to go anytime.”

Bassist Robert Trujillo’s previously assured fans that they won’t have to wait as long for their next LP.

“It will come a lot sooner than the previous two did… this time around I think we’ll be able to jump on it a lot quicker and jump in the studio and start working,” he previously said.

“We’ve all vowed to get this one going sooner than later. Now, how soon? I don’t know. We’ve been touring non-stop. It’s been over two years now. At some point, sure, we’ll need to take a little bit of a break. It’s sort of the right thing for us to do because we’ve been going so hard.”

Meanwhile, the band are due to play two shows to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their classic ‘S&M’ album.

Reuniting with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, who accompanied the band on the iconic live album and DVD, the anniversary shows will serve as part of the grand opening of the new Chase Centre, a multi-purpose arena in San Francisco that will also be the new home of NBA champions the Golden State Warriors.
